After working full time and pretty flat out for almost twenty years, I am in the lucky position of being able to reflect on what I’d like to do for the next 20 plus years of my working life. I thrive on throwing myself into new challenges and it’s time for something a bit different. I am an investment professional turned small company manager so my experience ranges from a traditional ‘City’ investment role to much more entrepreneurial activities starting and managing small businesses across a number of sectors.
The prospect of working with an organisation which has a fantastic raison d’etre but could do with some help making it all happen has huge appeal. So when I discovered the _SocialStarters programme, I jumped at the opportunity to get involved.
After studying History at Cambridge University, I qualified as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and initially worked as a UK equity investment manager, developing financial skills, business acumen and a thorough grounding in risk/reward analysis. I moved on to help establish a new investment firm where I was responsible for developing the UK equity fund and then a variety of alternative investment ventures. From a standing start, I developed, implemented and managed a Brazilian farmland project and a film music copyright investment. The projects involved getting up to speed in completely new industries in a very short timeframe, financial modelling, risk analysis, fund raising and working in different geographies with cultural and regulatory complexities.
My experience in Brazil and with film music copyright ignited my passion for small ventures and I subsequently set up and ran a film development company where I became experienced at negotiating with Hollywood producers (!) as well as developing business strategy, fund raising, reporting to investors and managing the day to day operations. As the international travel became too onerous for my young family, I moved to a debt peer-to-peer lending/crowdfunding company where I was responsible for driving growth in both lenders and borrowers. It was an exciting time to be scaling up in fintech.
My most recent role was as the Finance & Operations Director of a small, fast growing jewellery brand where I worked with the founder to shore up the operational side of the business, preparing for manageable growth and external investment.
During my career, I have had the opportunity to develop excellent management skills, strong financial analysis, a sharp eye for detail, a very thick skin, the ability to ‘pivot’ when required, the confidence to roll up my sleeves and get stuck into pretty much anything and a good sense of humour. Having been involved in such a wide range of companies, I really hope I could be empathetic, thought-provoking and most of all an extremely helpful resource.
I am currently a Trustee of a charitable organisation in Cambridge, spending a bit more time with my young family, loving my hot power yoga and exploring my career options. I can’t wait for my _SocialStarters placement to begin….
