Getting Inspired By Sport in Rio: Meet Rishawd

Rishawd is currently in the field in Rio de Janeiro, volunteering with a couple of community sports organisations in between the 2016 Olympics and Paralympic games. He is also developing his own project around sports development and young people with the support of the _SocialStarters team.

Hello!  My name is Rishawd Watson, and I live in Chicago, IL, USA.  I have been working in the education and athletic fields for the past 12 years in a variety of capacities (athletic coach, teacher, youth development coordinator, and current high school administrator).

I have always been passionate about travel, and learning about how different cultures approach this journey that we call life. As a lifelong learner, I am intrigued to gain an understanding on how educational systems throughout the world can influence the social, economic, and political systems within a specific environment.

After completing my master’s program in Educational Administration this past June, I knew that I wanted to become an educational leader, but not in the traditional sense (ie high school principal).

When I learned about the Social Starters Rio Inspiration program; it sounded like the perfect opportunity for me to combine my two worlds (sports and education) in the culturally rich and vibrant setting of Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.

In my work here, I plan to have an influence on, and be influenced by the youth and project managers that I will interact with on a daily basis. The key takeaways will provide me with a glimpse of how sports and education are conjunctively used as a vehicle for youth development in Rio de Janeiro. With plans of returning to Chicago with this new found knowledge, and putting it into action; I am excited to be a part of this life changing experience!

If you’d like to #JoinUs in Rio de Janeiro we’re still taking applications for our October Immersion Programme, a 6 week structured group volunteer programme. We’re also running 2 programmes in 2017, one in March/April and one in September/October. Visit the _SocialStarters website for all the details of how to apply and the fee involved.
