Life easily becomes monotonous and resentment starts to build when you commute for hours on end. That was my life. I used to spend at least 3.5 hours a day commuting to and from a job in London that left me less than satisfied. It was time for change.
Working in the UK charity sector designing and developing fundraising products was great but I felt disconnected from the people I was meant to be helping, and as a whole, I felt unfulfilled and unhappy. When I saw the _SocialStarters ad, it immediately called out to me. An opportunity to get really hands on, making direct impact in the community. And more so, in Asia.
Having lived in India before, it was a tough decision choosing between returning to a country I loved and Sri Lanka, with all its rich offerings. I decided I should go with something completely new, so Sri Lanka it was.
I’m really excited at the prospect of being able to work collaboratively with people who genuinely want to change and improve things for themselves and their community.
Dissatisfied with my job, I’d been thinking about career change for a while; applying for this role provided the impetus to take the leap. I’d applied back in June 2015. Firstly, I didn’t want to miss out on this amazing opportunity, secondly, I had a lot of organising to do.
I’m hoping the experience and time away will inspire and help me develop an idea I have around improving wellbeing – being healthy in mind and body – through play. Play being any activity engaged in for enjoyment and recreation.
